Mission:Waikiki - The Perplexing Beginning

It was less than a week ago when the phone rang. Very early in the morning, at least in Hawaii time. I struggled out of my slumber and grabbed the phone:

“PL speaking”

“The Cat in the Hat” said the voice at the other end.

“The Squid in the Shorts” I countered, giving the counter-sign.

“Plate - we’ve got a job for you”

I knew who it was. And who he worked for. I had done some things for them in the past of a sensitive nature. The last time it had been a job cleaning up in the aftermath of an incident involving a sumo wrestler, a self-storage locker and the password for the CIA’s AOL account. It didn’t end well. But that wasn’t important now.

“What is it exactly?” I asked. Whatever it was, I knew it had to be big. They only called when it was. Or when their own agent was on maternity leave.

“Something has come to our attention. We’re not sure what to make of it. But we do know that this could be very bad. For everybody.”

“What are you talking about?” I tried to stay calm, but this kind of talk from this person meant business. I was wide awake now.

“It’s come to our attention that there are some suspicious vehicles in Waikiki. Since you’re on the ground there, we need you to look into it. Find out what you can.”

“Suspicious vehicles? What do you mean?”

“I don’t know if we should talk about this on the phone, even if it is a secure line. But, here goes - It has come to our attention that there are not 1, but 2, cars in Waikiki made up to look like the van from ‘The A Team’!”

I almost dropped the phone. This WAS big. This was the last thing I expected him to tell me. And there was more.
